LAW FIRMMorgan & Morgan

Alex Mann works in our Mass Tort Law & Briefing Group, bringing with him over six years of experience in motion practice representing clients at both plaintiff and corporate defense firms on complex litigation matters.

Mr. Mann graduated from Brown University in 2011 and received his J.D. from New York University School of Law in 2015. Prior to joining Morgan & Morgan, he worked on a variety of class action and multidistrict litigations, including multimillion dollar cases in patent law, securities litigation, pharmaceutical products liability, contract law, and most recently, bankruptcy law.

After law school, Mr. Mann quickly developed a reputation for his thorough research and argument construction. He became the only first-year associate to manage a growing team of investigators. On his first major case involving a years-long international environment contamination suit, he developed an argument regarding a fees-shifting contract provision that helped expedite an optimal settlement for his corporate client.

While in corporate litigation, Mr. Mann worked on a pro bono case that would come to reshape the legal landscape for the treatment of student debt in bankruptcy. For over a decade, student loan creditors enjoyed a widely accepted interpretation of Section 523(a)(8)(A)(ii) that rendered virtually all educational debt non-dischargeable in bankruptcy. Mr. Mann formulated an argument that such an interpretation violated the statutory canon of noscitur a sociis. In 2016, the Eastern District of New York was the first to adopt this position, and after it overturned years of contrary precedent, Mr. Mann left corporate practice to devote himself fulltime to helping student debtors who had been through bankruptcy.

Over the next few years, this case would evolve into multiple class action suits, ultimately implicating a pool of debt valued in excess of $1 billion, with judgments endorsing the narrower interpretation of Section 523(a) in the Fifth and Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeals. This litigation and its successes have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, CBS News, Bloomberg Law, Forbes, and Newsweek, among others.

Outside of his legal practice, Mr. Mann writes Javascript and is a graduate of Fullstack Academy of Code. He has developed web apps to streamline various processes for the benefit of his clients, including a feature to automate the preparation of discharge violation complaints.

Mr. Mann lives in Connecticut with his husband and two dogs. In his free time, he enjoys all racquet sports, and is currently reading his way through the Modern Library Association’s 100 Best Novels.
